Legal Internships and Mentoring

Each student participant in NJ LEEP’s After-School Program is also required to participate in the Law Related-Education Program. Within the Law Related-Education Program law firms, corporate legal departments, prosecutors' offices, and attorneys serve an essential role in inspiring students to greater achievement, and in helping students build the confidence to believe that they can achieve their dreams.

"It is difficult for me to remember a time when mentoring wasn't a part of my life, either as the recipient of wonderful mentoring, or being a mentor to someone else. As I've gone through life, one of the guiding principles that I hold most dear is to strive everyday to make the world a better place for those that live in it. Being a mentor is one of the ways I ensure that I give back to others, impart the values that I have received from family, teachers and friends on young people and learn and grow from the wisdom that my mentees inevitably impart on me. Thank you NJ LEEP for facilitating such a rewarding experience!"

-Heather M. Butts, JD, MPH

  • In the summer between his/her freshman and sophomore year, each student who fulfills all the NJ LEEP freshman year requirements completes a paid internship at a New Jersey law firm.

  • At the beginning of his/her sophomore school year, each student receives a mentor who is an attorney.  This attorney serves as the student’s mentor until he/she graduates from NJ LEEP.

  • Beginning in his/her sophomore year, each student participates in NJ LEEP’s Constitutional Debate Program.  Students compete four times a year at the Seton Hall University School of Law, and winners are chosen by lawyers and law students who serve as judges.
